  • Presentation Title:

SmartBay the Galway Bay Marine and Renewable Energy Test Site – A marine test bed for research, innovation to underpin the blue economy.

    Presentation Presentation:

Irelands test facility for marine Technologies is facilitating the development of innovative approaches to energy, sensing and data management/visualisation technologies through sensor and equipment deployments in a real-world marine environment. SmartBay comprises a suite of surface and subsea technology platforms including a network of buoys and a cabled underwater observatory against which new technologies can be validated. The building of this unique facility will be described and examples of how observing systems can be used to develop decision support tools which have direct applications within different maritime sectors described. Current projects in which the SmartBay infrastructure is being used to test novel innovative multifunctional sensors for in-situ monitoring of the marine environment and the generation of power from ocean waves will be described. The facility is being used to develop future industry driven projects to trial and develop sensor-driven planned maintenance of underwater equipment and the control of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles. The impacts of these activities on the development of an indigenous supply chain and the potential to develop new and innovative Irish led technologies for the blue economy will be described.
