    Presentation Title:

eHealth: Monitoring Patients undergoing Chemotherapy Using Mobile Phone Technology

    Presentation Synopsis:

UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems are, in partnership with the University of Surrey, conducting a Randomised Controlled Trial  within four Irish Hospitals, trialling eSMART (electronic Symptom Management using Advanced Remote Technology).  The mobile device allows patients who are undergoing chemotherapy to enter in their symptoms on a daily basis.  This information is sent to a secure server, processed, and clinicians are alerted if there are areas of concern.  If appropriate, patients then receive a call from their clinician in order to assess the patients symptoms and act on them as necessary.  The UCD team are part of the wider trial network, working across 14 European sites, enrolling over 1100 participants.

    Speaker Bio:

Jess began her career within UCD in 2015 after moving to Ireland from the UK.  After obtaining her nursing degree, her interest in research was encouraged in the five years practicing as  a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Liver and Pancreas Cancer at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham.  She was awarded a Scholarship from the National Institute for Health Research to undertake a MA in Research Methods (Health) in the University of Nottingham.  Her thesis was focussed on trying to ease the physical and psychological hardships that patients with a cancer diagnosis have to endure.

She is enthusiastic about improving patient experience, particularly during the challenging stages of cancer diagnosis, treatment and into survivorship.  The eSMART project is an intuitive and patient centred approach to a clinical trial, which is central to her motivation for being part of the Irish team within UCD.
